spencers diary, twelve:

And then the monk passed out. She doesn’t seem to carry an ID card or a diary. It looks like her companion is to blame – so the golem wrapped her up in a blanket and just STARTED CARRYING HER AROUND.

The giant tore down the curtains that cover the walls and the walls in this little back room are covered in like? Sigils? Mystical symbols? Culminating in a weird hole in the ceiling. Or, I should say, a black circle. It felt like yarrows secret? Church? Why would there be a black hole in the ceiling and two archways, also circumscribed with magical shit, but on the arches it relates to travel. Some of it seems to be, abjuration, related. It was a very weird room. Though the far arch the path led to a fire escape, and the other way led to a one-way glass overlooking the dance floor and an office. When I poked my head inside the office the woman working in there did not buy my “looking for the restroom” story and called the guards, who also didn’t buy my story but I got to pretend that the demon was my assistant and that I was a big-shot necromancer for like, five minutes, which was fun. The guard put me in a crazy “tube of silence“ and then the demon said something to them I couldn’t hear, that they believed. She told me later that she told them that I was “just stupid”, which tracks, and that I was HER man and that she’s some big-shot artisan, which is mostly true actually. She seems unused to lying and like lying freaks her out.

The guards seemed to think yarrow had been out on the floor all night & not taking meetings – which says to me that the man we met was not Yarrow at all but the villain. Which means we fucking HAD HIM WITHIN REACH. The golem tracked the object that was offered and that we didn’t take to a _very_ nice place called “The Ornament” & I choked talking to a bouncer _but_ the demon appeared behind him (?!) & he called her _Ms. Aranje_ and apologized and let us pass.

The ornament is probably the best building in the entire world. It is shiny & loud and absolutely full of rich people. I made $200 off a cake woman with Mme. Bonvilla and promptly spent 30 of it on a drink upstairs. Almost every suSPEC was there, but on the third floor was the Smokegazer. He was rollin in fat stacks at a card table, he’s definitely cheating but I didn’t see how because almost as soon as we got there he stood up to leave and we had to follow him outside and down the street. We cornered him in an alley and it became exceptionally clear this dip’s just a face, a ruse, a herring. Which really burns me up because I was all amped up to merk ’im and steal his shit. tHe golem made him tell the truth and we found out

1. Where Smokegazer lives

2. That he refers to his boss as “he/him”

3. And that they communicate through dreams, like when the boss talked to the bandits.

We made a meeting for tomorrow night at the forge and then I followed him around, but he clocked I was tailing him and gave me the run around before returning home around sunrise. You can get an okay cup of coffee and an empanada at the piazza near his house, and shortly after he arrived home I saw a WHISP OF PURPLE SMOKE ENTER HIS WINDOW which I guess is the boss communicating with his dreams or whatever.

Just now a little kid tried to rob me! Brave little bastard. But I taught him an important lesson: do not rob from another thief and I left him with his life and shiner but took his stuff, three rings, a toy horse, and a biscuit. I don’t want the horse, and I feel kinda bad about taking it but he ran off. When I got back to the spot the demon had been waiting up for me, but was now asleep. I gave her the little toy horse but now I’m thinking maybe I should try to give it back to the kid, if I ever see him again.
